A 14-year-old girl has died after the rear part of a roller coaster came off the track at a popular amusement park in northern Denmark on Thursday, authorities said.

Police said they had received a call at 12:50 p.m. local time that a car was stuck in the Cobra ride at the Tivoli Friheden park in Aarhus, Denmark's second-largest city, and that several people were trapped.

Henrik Olsen, the park's manager, told local newspaper Aarhus Stiftstidende that the rear two seats of the ride had broken away from the rest and were hanging under the wagon train. He said guests were trapped up to 10 feet above the ground.

"There was a big bang and there were people crying," a witness told the newspaper. "A mother stood by the Cobra and looked up while she exclaimed several times 'my children, my children.'" The witness said it was not clear if the women's children were in the part of the rollercoaster that broke away.

In a news release, East Jutland Police confirmed that a 14-year-old girl from Copenhagen had died. Her relatives have been notified, police said.

A 13-year-old boy sustained injuries to one hand, police said, and his parents have also been notified.

Police said the park was evacuated, and witnesses to the accident and relatives of the victims are being offered psychological support.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident and girl's death, police said.

"The exact cause of the accident, including the death, must now be investigated via e.g. technical investigations and questioning of witnesses at the scene of the accident," police said in the release. "A massive investigative effort is currently going on at Tivoli Friheden."

Police also urged people not to share footage of the incident on social media and appealed to anyone with material relevant to the investigation to get in touch.

The park is "temporarily closed," according to its website, with no further details given.

The Cobra roller coaster is described as one of the park's "wildest" rides on its website.

It is 25 meters (82 feet) high and has a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour (44 miles per hour), according to the site.

Thursday is not the fist time the amusement park, located in the southern part of Aarhus, has had to close after an incident on the Cobra roller coaster.

In 2008, four young people were injured when two seats fell off the ride.

Newsweek has contacted Tivoli Friheden for further comment.
